Karen and Dave, AKA a Night Among the Stars!

ottawa wedding photography 2016

what a night. With the sky displaying thousands of stars, and the Milky Way’s galactic center in plain view, Karen and Dave took a short moment on a bench and let me take some pictures of them. I’m sure that being away from the party and the music for a few minutes while I forced them to sit in silence for 30 second intervals gave them time to reflect everything they had just gone through in just one day!

Glassblowing in Ottawa AKA Glass Masters are Among Us!

Ottawa Glass blowing ornament_0004When I travelled to Venice, Italy, I saw a store where they demonstrated how to create pieces of art with glass. I was intrigued because being a guy, I am naturally attracted to fire and melting things! So when Shannon invited me to a glass blowing, Christmas ornament making workshop, I jumped at the opportunity! Continue reading

Winter in Ottawa, Canada AKA Snow, Cold Weather and Hot Chocolate!

This weekend my wife and I rented a car and decided to go to Gatineau Park for a hike and a picnic, before the winter chill came (I’m a little bit of a baby when it comes to cold weather!). Of course I decided that being in the forest would be the perfect opportunity to take a few pictures, and it wasn’t long before I found a nice little creek!

Surprising my Wife in Penticton, BC AKA Traveling to the Okanagan Valley!

thanksgiving penticton

For Thanksgiving, my wife decided to visit her family in the Okanagan Valley to spend some time with them. She wanted me to go, but I had a lot of work at the time and told her that it would be pretty hard to get the time off to be able to fly out west, and that I would have to sit this one out. Little did she know that I bought my tickets a little bit after her and decided that I was going to surprise the bejesus out of her!

Once she left, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands (husbands will know lol) and wanted to do something creative and fun! At the same time, my boss had started this challenge of waking up at 5am everyday in order to get more done, and I had followed suit (for the record, that ended after exactly 2 weeks!) with the intention of capturing a few timelapses around Ottawa. Jenna & Mitch AKA The Harry Potter Wedding!

Sitting at the coffee shop with Jenna and Mitch, I never would have thought that I’d be photographing a Harry Potter inspired wedding! Coming from Calgary, we had previously chatted on Skype about perhaps using their Mercedes as a prop for some of the photographs, but when they told me they liked Harry Potter and would consider doing some fun pictures around the books, my mind went nuts!

It’s not often that you get to shoot something out of the ordinary, as most couples want formal portraits mixed with some candid ones. It’s also not too often you get to shoot a wedding with people as laid back as Jenna and Mitch! Their down to earth style along with their awesome wedding party was perfect for the type of shooting we’d end up doing!

I arrived at the location a bit early so I could check out the decorations and take pictures without being worried about missing any important details, and I immediately knew that I made the right decision! The tent was gorgeously decorated, with a tasteful, camping/nature vibe to it, reminiscent of William Weasley and Fleur Delacour (Harry Potter characters for those out of the loop!). Playing with fire aka my 10 year old self just high-fived me through the space time continuum!

Playing with fire

Playing with fire

Despite officially beginning on March 20, Spring really began in Ottawa last Saturday, and after a long winter of barely using my camera, I was very excited to hit the snow-free ground running!

Like most boys, I went through a small pyromaniac faze. Fire is exciting! It’s in constant motion and you can literally feel the energy in it! With this in mind, I have had many photography ideas based around fire, like a trash-the-dress shoot or an engagement session with a fun, and probably a bit crazy, couple! But to do any of this I need to learn how to create, control and photograph fire!

The Multiple Sides of a Photograph (Multiple Exposure Photography and Me)

A while ago, I saw a photograph that seemed to mix two separate pictures into one, so that it looked like a person was made up of branches. At the time, I thought to myself “How in the world did they do this?”. Now that I have a bit more practice with Photoshop, I decided to do some research and give it a try!

The idea in multiple exposure photography is to merge different pictures to create something new. There are many techniques to accomplish this, but the easiest one is to simply change the blending mode to something else (Overlay or Soft Light work well), and take it from there! That’s the easy part. The difficulty comes in asking yourself, “What pictures combined will give me something interesting?”. The options are limitless, as long as you have a good imagination!
